12-step Resolutions: Fitness

I have a lot of things I want to tackle this year. Due to all the spheres of influence I’ve been thinking about, I decided to break it up and share my plans for 2015 over the course of the month of January. Here is part 2: Fitness.

I have a love/hate relationship with working out. I love how I feel after an hour of yoga class. I’m terrible about getting there on time (they lock you out) and hate to spend $15 a week to do it (so I don’t). I would love to do yoga at home. Clearing space every time feels like a lot of work, and then there’s inevitably a child or puppy who decides to “do yoga with you.”

I like to walk around downtown before work. Since we went down to a single car, it’s more difficult to schedule in time to do that. But I should.

And finally, my schedule makes it difficult to commit to a weekly, organized thing.

So there’s my excuses. Done. I’m putting those aside now and making a plan for what’s going to happen this year. Each month I’m either increasing one of my goals or adding a new one.

January
– Walk 10,000 steps per day
Yoga once per week Move
I just got a pedometer for Christmas, so when I pulled a number out of the hat, I had no idea if I would hit it or not. Turns out not. But I am getting a good baseline for my average steps per day (about 5000), and I’m doing things like taking the long route to the bathroom from my desk at work that are upping it to a consistent 6000 steps.
As to the yoga-at-home plan, the new puppy peed on my yoga mat and we are in the midst of packing our whole house. But I think packing and moving bins from room to room and down two flights of stairs is making up for it on the training front.

February
– Walk 10,000 steps per day
– Walk dog once a week
– Yoga once per week
The pup is getting better with walking on a leash. I think she’ll be ready to take short walks soon, and taking her out will help me hit my 10,000 per day. We will also be about a half mile from the bus to the little one’s new school, so I’d like to walk him there when the weather is nice and we are on time.

March
– Walk 10,000 steps per day
– Walk dog once per week
– Yoga twice per week
I think we are likely to get more good weather the later it gets, so in theory we can walk to the bus more often.
We are planning a short vacation the week before my birthday and I’m taking a few days for my birthday weekend, but I don’t think any of these goals need to change because of it. I’ll be starting a 7-week yoga class at the rec center on the Monday after my birthday.

April
– Walk 10,000 steps per day
– Walk dog twice per week
– Yoga twice per week
Yoga class at the rec center continues through the end of the month. Time to take stock: Did I enjoy it? Do I want to sign up for another class?

May
– Walk 10,000 steps per day
– Walk dog three times per week
– Yoga twice per week

June
– Walk 15,000 steps per day
– Walk dog three times per week
– Yoga twice per week

July
– Walk 15,000 steps per day
– Walk dog three times per week
– Yoga twice per week
– Run 1 mile each week
I don’t think the running will happen with the puppy at this point, but I would like to work her up to be able to run with me. It will help me feel safe if I’m going to go out regularly. The little one will be with his grandmother for all of this month, so there will likely be more time I can dedicate to taking care of me. But T will be nearing her due date, so we’ll see.

August
– Walk 15,000 steps per day
– Walk dog three times per week
– Yoga three times per week
– Run 1 mile each week
The baby is due this month and the wedding is a month away. It will be a challenge at this point to continue stepping it up. Am I asking too much of myself at this point? I don’t think so, but it’s going to take some serious motivation to maintain this.

September
– Walk 15,000 steps per day
– Walk dog five times per week
– Yoga three times per week
– Run 1 mile each week
We’re getting married!

October
– Walk 15,000 steps per day
– Walk dog daily
– Yoga three times per week
– Run 1 mile each week
Yes, I realize that I hit walk the dog daily just as Michigan starts to get cold. But at this point she’ll be just shy of a year old (I think we have a Halloween baby), and she looks like she’s going to be big. She (and I) will need the exercise.

November
– Walk 20,000 steps per day
– Walk dog daily
– Yoga three times per week
– Run 1 mile per week

December
– Walk 20,000 steps per day
– Walk dog daily
– Yoga three times per week
– Run 2 miles per week

What do you guys think? Reasonable? Unreasonable?
